Curriculum: Music

Our curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions.
  • Learn to sing and use their voices, musical instruments and technology to create and compose music on their own and with others.
  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated through the inter-related dimensions of music.

Music at Beverley Minster Primary School follows these specifications, providing a broad, creative and expressive curriculum. We believe that music is a powerful medium which is accessible for children of all abilities, backgrounds, cultures and languages. We endeavour to help children progress and develop fluency in the inter-related dimensions of music: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and structure. With a strong understanding of these music dimensions, children can confidently develop their knowledge and skills through listening and appraising, performing, composing and improvising music from all styles and traditions. Through music, we strive to support children’s emotional health and well-being and aim to foster a lifelong curiosity, awareness and appreciation for all types of music.

We intend to give every child the opportunity to experience a sense of achievement and pride by having the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument (other than voice) before the end of Year 6. They also have the opportunity to join the KS2 school choir. We want to challenge  children to be confident individuals and team members, who are encouraged to express themselves through creation and performance.
